Drone Filming in National Parks: What Is and Is Not Allowed

Why most US National Park units are off-limits to drones, and where scenic aerials can be legally filmed instead.

The National Park rule

Launching, landing or operating drones in US National Park System units has been prohibited since 2014 under NPS Policy Memorandum 14-05, unless a specific authorisation is granted. Fines apply. Do not book a provider who offers drone filming inside a National Park without showing that authorisation.

Alternatives

National forests generally allow drones except in designated wilderness areas, and many state parks, private ranches and tourism properties permit drones with permission. A local aerial cinematographer will know legal locations with similar scenery.

Plan responsibly

Check land manager rules, wildlife restrictions and temporary flight restrictions (for example over wildfires) before the shoot. Responsible operators will tell you when a location is off-limits.
