How Stadium TFRs Affect Drone Sports Filming
Why game-day drone coverage needs special FAA approval, and what to ask a provider who claims stadium experience.
The stadium flight restriction
An FAA temporary flight restriction covers 3 nautical miles around stadiums with 30,000 or more seats, from one hour before to one hour after NFL, MLB, NCAA Division I football and NASCAR events. LAANC cannot authorise flights inside it, and fines can be severe.
How legitimate coverage happens
Broadcasters and approved operators gain access through the FAA Special Governmental Interest (SGI) process or a broadcaster authorisation. Providers claiming game-day stadium coverage should be able to show that they have operated under such approvals before.
Events outside the restriction
Smaller venues, training sessions, college sports below the threshold, golf, sailing, cycling and marathons may be filmable with normal airspace authorisation — but operations over people, venue permission and event organiser rules still apply.
Live feeds
Live sports usually need a live feed to the outside broadcast truck or stream. Ask whether the provider uses RF transmission or bonded cellular, the latency they achieve, and whether they have integrated with a broadcast production before.
